It emphasizes the role in learning of instinct, play, and habit, along with the importance of engaging the voluntary interests of students. James'swarm and sympathetic nature informs his treatment of children, who can best be taught by those who respect the child's autonomy and who avoid what he calls "hammering in." Psychology: Briefer Course is far more than a shortened version of his monumental Principles of Psychology.

Eminente psicólogo y filósofo norteamericano, nació en Nueva York en 1842 y murió en New Hampshire en 1910. Miembro de una acomodada familia, hermano del novelista Henry James, inició su actividad investigadora como crítico de la psicología tradicional desde una perspectiva renovadora la psicología científica centrada en una concepción orgánica del individuo. El pragmatismo que propugna en la reflexión filosófica pretende intervenir éticamente en la sociedad a través del utilitarismo y de la acción. Entre sus obras más importantes destacan: Pragmatism: a new name for old ways of thinking (1897) y Essays in radical empiricism (1912).
