Robert B. Parker (Springfield, 1932-Cambridge, 2010) fue uno de los autores más prolíficos de novela negra. En 1973 publicó la primera de ellas, El manuscrito Godwulf (SN, 255), en la que presentaba a Spenser, el detective privado que iniciaría la serie que le hizo famoso y le convirtió en un referente del género negro estadounidense. El personaje fue llevado a la pequeña pantalla en los años ochenta y gozó de una gran popularidad. Parker fue autor también de otras sagas policiacas, como la de la detective Sunny Randall y la del policía Jesse Stone, y en 1989 aceptó terminar la novela inacabada de Raymond Chandler La historia de Poodle Springs, y en 1991 escribió una secuela para El sueño eterno.
