Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), más conocido como Lewis Carroll, fue el mayor de los once hijos de un pastor protestante. En 1850, ingresó en la Universidad de Oxford, donde estudió Matemáticas y Humanidades, licenciándose en Lógica Matemática con sobresaliente. Después, trabajó como bibliotecario y más tarde fue profesor en el Christ Church College, con lo que su permanencia en la ciudad universitaria se prolongaría cerca de cincuenta años. También siguió la carrera eclesiástica, hasta el grado de diácono, pero sin llegar a ser sacerdote.
