Emily Brontë (Thornton, 1818-Haworth, 1848), poeta y novelista inglesa, publicó en 1847 su única y celebradísima novela, em Wuthering Heights /em , bajo el seudónimo de Ellis Bell, con el que consiguió evitar el rechazo, como tantas otras escritoras de su época, a que la publicaran por ser obra de una mujer. La quinta de seis hermanos, entre los que destacan sus hermanas y también escritoras Anne y Charlotte cuya novela, em Jane Eyre /em , publicada en 1847 también bajo seudónimo masculino, es otra de las cumbres de la narrativa victoriana , murió prematuramente de tuberculosis. Según Alejandro Gándara, em Cumbres Borrascosas /em es una de las obras mayores de todos los tiempos, escrita, además, con esas palabras destinadas a pesar en el corazón humano y en el de la vida .
