Es una galardonada actriz de cine, televisión y teatro. Entre otros honores, ha obtenido dos premios Emmy Primetime, dos Globos de Oro, tres premios del Sindicato de Actores de Cine de Estados Unidos y un premio de teatro del Evening Standard. Más allá de su trabajo en la interpretación, Gillian es una activista respetada y reconocida internacionalmente, además de abanderada de causas benéficas y coautora, junto a Jennifer Nadel, del libro We: A Manifesto for Women Everywhere Nosotras: un manifiesto para las mujeres de todo el mundo , incluido en la lista de bestsellers del Sunday Times.
