Santiago Ramón y Cajal nació el primero de mayo de 1852 en Petilla de Aragón y murió el 17 de octubre de 1934 en Madrid, España. Fue profesor de anatomía descriptiva y general de la Universidad de Valencia (1883), profesor de histología y anatomía patológica de la Universidad de Barcelona (1887) y en la Universidad de Madrid desde 1892 hasta la fecha de jubilación a los 70 años de edad. Entre sus premios, títulos y honores destacan: diploma y medalla de oro de la Exposición Universal del Barcelona (1888), doctor en medicina honoris causa por la Universidad de Cambridge (1894), miembro de la Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales (1895), doctor en medicina honoris causa por la Universidad de Würzbourg (1896), miembro de la Sociedad Española de Historia Natural de la que fue presidente en 1896, miembro de la Real Academia de Medicina (1897), doctor en medicina honoris causa por la Universidad de Clark (1899), premio Moscú (1900), consejero de Instrucción Pública (1900), Gran Cruz de Isabel la Católica (1900), Gran Cruz de Alfonso XII (1900), director del Instituto de Higiene Alfonso XIII (1900), medalla de oro Helmholtz (1905), premio Nobel de Fisiología o Medicina (1906), presidente de la Junta para Ampliación de Estudios (1907), Fellow de la Sociedad Real de Londres (1909), comendador de la Legión de Honor (1914), cruz de la Orden "Pour le Mérite" (1915), medalla Echegaray de la Real Academia de Ciencias (1922), título honorífico de doctor de la Universidad de París (1924), banda de la Orden de la República (1933).
