Three adventurers set out to kill a sea monster, but all is not as it seems. Out in the vast expanse of the Pacific they find not a beast but a submarine - the Nautilus, an advanced craft captained by the enigmatic Captain Nemo. Captured and hauled aboard, they accompany him through coral reefs, shipwrecks, and ancient ruins.

There they hunt sharks, and battle giant squid, not realising that the greatest danger is Nemo himself, who will stop at nothing in his quest for vengeance. Beautifully illustrated by the French painter Edouard Riou, who worked with Jules Verne on six of his novels, this Macmillan Collector's Library edition of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea also includes an afterword by author David Stuart Davies. Biografía del autor

Jules Gabriel Verne nació en 1828, en la isla de Feydeau, en el puerto francés de Nantes. Obligado pos sus padres a estudiar derecho en París, el contacto con los salones literarios de la capital despertó en él una intensa vocación por las letras. 1n 1863 Pierre-Jules Hetzel, uno de los editores más importantes de la época, le aceptó publicar Cinco semanas en globo, que fue acogida con entusiasmo. Esa fue la primera de una serie de más de 60 novelas y series de historias cortas que autor y editor reunieron en una fantástica colección titulada Viajes extraordinarios. Durante años, Verne combinó su faceta de escritor con el placer de viajar y con intensas actividades municipales en Amiens, donde vivió desde 1871, y donde murió en 1905.
