At the close of a long day, Inspector Stephen Villani stands in the bathroom of a luxury apartment high above the city. In the glass bath, a young woman lies dead. Villani's job as the head of the Victoria Police Homicide Squad is bathed in blood and sorrow.

Peter Temple (Sudáfrica, 1946) es un conocido novelista australiano de origen sudafricano. Periodista de profesión, a mediados de los años noventa decidió dedicarse a su auténtica vocación: la literatura. En 1996 inició la serie literaria protagonizada por el detective Jack Irish, que hasta la fecha cuenta con cuatro títulos y con dos exitosas adaptaciones para la televisión. Ha recibido en Australia una multitud de premios: el Colin Roderick, el Australian Book Publishers' Award y, hasta en cinco ocasiones, el Ned Kelly. Ha sido, además, el primer escritor australiano que ha recibido el Gold Dagger, concedido por la Crime Writers' Association británica.
