London, 1939. Journalists gather like vultures for the funeral of Wallis Simpson. A mournful King Edward VIII is on the throne and England is on the cusp of another dirty war.

In a dingy office in Bloomsbury, Cynthia Kirkpatrick starts working at the newly-launched magazine Duration where a motley crew of journalists and political thinkers congregate. All the while, 'the faction', a body of influential and militant pro-peace campaigners are gathering steam behind the scenes - there's an American clerk who knows rather too much, plotting Tory MPs, and the brilliant Beverly Nicholls, diarist and speech-writer, who finds himself tasked to write a King's speech like no other. As Hitler encroaches further into Europe the capital is alive with conspiracy, and Cynthia finds, to her cost, that taking sides is a very dangerous business.
