Her father has mysteriously disappeared ten year ago, and after answering, four years later, a newspaper advert enquiring for her, she has begun to receive each year, on the same date, a precious pearl in the post from an unknown benefactor. Now, with the last pearl, she has also received a message, telling her she is "a wronged woman" and asking for a meeting that very night outside the Lyceum Theatre.

Biografía del autor

Arthur Conan Doyle nació en Edimburgo en 1859, en una familia donde casi todos destacaban en alguna actividad artística. En su ciudad natal se educó en una escuela pública y después pasó a un colegio de jesuitas, donde conoció bien a los prosistas latinos y a los clásicos ingleses, principalmente a Shakespeare. Posteriormente, estudió Medicina en la Universidad de Edimburgo hasta 1881. En 1886 termina de escribir x{0026}lt;i Estudio en escarlatax{0026}lt;/i , donde definía el personaje de Sherlock Holmes, quien protagonizaría muchas de sus historias hasta 1926 (x{0026}lt;i El signo de los cuatrox{0026}lt;/i , x{0026}lt;i El sabueso de los Baskervillex{0026}lt;/i , x{0026}lt;i Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmesx{0026}lt;/i ...). No obstante, Doyle también creó otros personajes singulares, como el profesor Challenger (protagonista de varias novelas, entre ellas x{0026}lt;i El mundo perdidox{0026}lt;/i ), y escribió novela histórica, que según confesó era su máxima aspiración literaria. En 1902 recibió del gobierno el título de x{0026}lt;i Sirx{0026}lt;/i , y falleció en 1930 en Crowborough (Inglaterra) de un ataque al corazón.
