Nació en 1960 en Hangzhou (Zhejiang).Trabajó como dentista durante cincoaños antes de empezar a escribir en 1983.En 2002 se convirtió en el primer autorchino en ganar el prestigioso James JoyceFoundation Award. Es autor de Gritos en lallovizna (2007, de próxima publicación enSeix Barral), Brothers (Seix Barral, 2009) y¡Vivir! (1992; Seix Barral, 2010), galardonadacon el premio italiano Grinzane Cavour.Crónica de un vendedor de sangre (1995;Seix Barral, 2014) y ¡Vivir! fueron elegidosdos de los libros más influyentes de la décadade 1990 en China.
