Es un referente en el mundo en la neurociencia de las decisiones, en neurociencia y educación, y en la neurociencia de la comunicación humana. Es uno de los directores del proyecto Human Brain Project, el esfuerzo más vasto del mundo para entender y emular el cerebro humano. Ha trabajado con magos, cocineros, ajedrecistas, músicos y artistas plásticos para reunir el conocimiento de la neurociencia a distintos aspectos de la cultura humana.
