Luke Rhinehart, cuyo verdadero nombre era George Cockcroft, nació el 15 de noviembre de 1932. De su vida, lo único seguro eran sus estudios en Cornell y Columbia y su matrimonio con Ann en 1956, con quien tuvo tres hijos. El resto de su historia parece haber estado marcado por los dados y el culto que lo rodeó: se decía que estudió budismo zen, enseñó inglés en las Baleares y en la India, e incluso que dio la vuelta al mundo en un trimarán. Escribió diez libros más, inspiró varias adaptaciones teatrales de su gran novela, y Paramount adquirió una opción para llevarla al cine. Falleció en su casa cerca de Nueva York el 6 de noviembre de 2020.
