In The Roots of Romanticism, one of the twentieth century's most influential philosophers dissects and assesses a movement that changed the course of history. But despite extensive further work this hope was not fulfilled, and the present volume is an edited transcript of his spoken words.

They destroyed the traditional notions of objective truth and validity in ethics with incalculable, all-pervasive results. As he said of the Romantics elsewhere: "The world has never been the same since, and our politics and morals have been deeply transformed by them. Combining the freshness and immediacy of the spoken word with Berlin's inimitable eloquence and wit, the lectures range over a cast of the greatest thinkers and artists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including Kant, Rousseau, Diderot, Schiller, Schlegel, Novalis, Goethe, Blake, Byron, and Beethoven. Berlin argues that the ideas and attitudes held by these and other figures helped to shape twentieth-century nationalism, existentialism, democracy, totalitarianism, and our ideas about heroic individuals, individual self-fulfillment, and the exalted place of art. This new edition features a corrected text with additional references; a new foreword by philosopher John Gray, in which he discusses Berlin's belief that the influence of romanticism has been unpredictable and contradictory in the extreme, fuelling anti-liberal political movements but also reinvigorating liberalism; and a new appendix that includes some of Berlin's correspondence about the lectures and the reactions to them.

Isaiah Berlin (Riga, 1909 x{0026} x02013; Oxford, 1997) fue uno de los principales pensadores del siglo xx. A los seis años se trasladó con su familia a Petrogrado (actual San Petersburgo), donde vivió la revolución bolchevique. En 1921 emigró a Inglaterra. Estudió en la Universidad de Oxford, donde fue fellow del All Souls College y del New College, así como profesor de Teoría Social y Política, y fundó el Wolfson College. Diplomático en Washington y Moscú en 1941 y 1942, también presidió la Academia Británica de 1974 a 1978. Sus logros en el campo de la historia de las ideas le hicieron acreedor de los premios Erasmus, Lippincott, Agnelli y Jerusalén. (South Shields, Inglaterra, 1948) es considerado uno de los pensadores más importantes de nuestro tiempo. Ha sido profesor de Ciencias Políticas en la Universidad de Oxford y de Pensamiento Europeo en la London School of Economics.
