Arthur Conan Doyle nació en Edimburgo en 1859, en una familia donde casi todos destacaban en alguna actividad artística. En su ciudad natal se educó en una escuela pública y después pasó a un colegio de jesuitas, donde conoció bien a los prosistas latinos y a los clásicos ingleses, principalmente a Shakespeare.
