Biografía del autor

Yasunari Kawabata nació en Osaka en 1899. Huérfano a los tres años, insomne perpetuo, cineasta en su juventud, lector voraz tanto de los clásicos como de las vanguardias europeas, fue un solitario empedernido. Escribió más de doce mil páginas de novelas, cuentos y artículos, y es uno de los escritores japoneses más populares dentro y fuera de su país. Mantuvo una profunda amistad con el escritor Yukio Mishima, del que fue su mentor y difusor. Recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura en el año 1968. Entre sus obras, muchas de ellas marcadas por la soledad y el erotismo, destacan La bailarina de Izu, El maestro de Go, Lo bello y lo triste (Emecé, 2001), Mil grullas (Emecé, 2005), País de nieve (Emecé, 2007), El rumor de la montaña (Emecé, 2007) e Historias de la palma de la mano (Emecé, 2008). Kawabata se suicidó a los setenta y dos años.
