Lionel Barber es uno de los periodistas británicos más importantes de los últimos años. Inició su carrera en 1978 como reportero en The Scotsman. Tras ser nombrado Young Journalist of the Year en el British Press Awards, se convirtió en el corresponsal de negocios del Sunday Times. Más adelante, fue corresponsal en Enterprising Britain.<br> Barber se incorporó al Financial Times en 1985 y le hicieron director en 2005. Su mayor logro en la etapa de quince años durante la que dirigió la publicación fue hacer que el FT pasara de ser un periódico eminentemente informativo e impreso a un medio digital puntero de alcance y prestigio global. Como director, intentó adaptarse a las cambiantes circunstancias mundiales para seguir defendiendo los principios nucleares del FT: la defensa del libre mercado globalizado y del capitalismo democrático.<br> En 2020, Barber empezó a presentar el podcast What Next?, el cual mantiene a día de hoy.
