Thomas Savage (1915-2003) nació en Salt Lake City, Utah. A los cinco años se fue a vivir con su madre y su nuevo esposo a un rancho de Montana, donde aprendería los oficios y la forma de vida de los vaqueros. Estudió escritura en la Universidad de Montana y escribió trece novelas que recibieron grandes elogios de la crítica.
