A young woman prays at her husband's bedside as he lies in a coma with a bullet in his neck. From outside come the sounds of tanks, gunshots, screaming and, most terrifying of all, silence. Inside, her two frightened daughters call to her from the hallway.

Biografía del autor

Atiq Rahimi (Kabul, 1962) cursó estudios secundarios en el Liceo franco-afgano de Kabul, y luego Literatura en la universidad de esa misma ciudad. En 1984, la guerra desatada tras la invasión soviética le obligó a refugiarse en Pakistán, desde donde pidió asilo político en Francia. Allí se doctoró en Comunicación Audiovisual en La Sorbona, vive en París y dedicado a la producción cinematográfica y a la escritura. Sus obras publicadas son Tierra y cenizas, Laberinto de sueño y angustia, La piedra de la paciencia (Premio Goncourt 2008) y Maldito sea Dostoievski. Él mismo ha adaptado y dirigido, con gran éxito, las películas basadas en Tierra y cenizas y La piedra de la paciencia. Desde 2002, cuando finalmente pudo regresar a su país natal, viaja con asiduidad a Kabul.
