Henry Beston nació en Quincy, Massachusetts, el 1 de junio de 1888, y murió en 1968. Licenciado por la Universidad de Harvard, ejerció por un año como profesor en la Universidad de Lyon, y en 1915, durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, se alistó en el ejército francés como conductor de ambulancia. Más tarde, en 1918, fue oficial de prensa de la Armada de los Estados Unidos. Su libro de mayor éxito, 'La casa más lejana', se publicó en 1928. Posteriormente se casó con la poeta y novelista Elizabeth Coatsworth, con quien se estableció en una granja de Maine hasta el final de sus días.
