Nació en la India y se trasladó a los Estados Unidos para continuar su educación, donde obtuvo un máster de la Universidad Wright en Dayton, Ohio, y un doctorado de la Universidad de California, Berkeley. Ha recibido premios por varios de sus 18 libros publicados, entre los cuales se han traducido al español La señora de las especias y El palacio de las ilusiones. Varias de sus obras se han adaptado al cine y el teatro.
