The year was 1958. James Ellroy was ten years old. His mother, Jean Hilliker, had divorced her fast-buck hustler husband. She gave her son a choice: live with his father or her. He chose his father, and Jean--"half gassed"--attacked him. He wished her dead. Three months later, she was murdered.
Ellroy writes, "I owe her for every true thing that I am. I must remove the malediction I have placed on her and on myself," and in "The Hilliker Curse, " he narrates his quest for "atonement in women." P B James Ellroy /B nació en Los Ángeles en 1948. Cuando sus padres se divorciaron en 1954, se mudó con su madre a El Monte, una zona deprimida de Los Ángeles en la que, poco después, ella sería asesinada. Después de años de delincuencia, alcohol y drogas, Ellroy decidió rehacer su vida y retratar en sus novelas el oscuro mundo de los bajos fondos. Entre sus obras más conocidas se encuentran I La Dalia Negra /I y I L.A. Confidential /I , que fueron llevadas al cine y se convirtieron en grandes éxitos de ventas y crítica. Junto con I El gran desierto /I y I Jazz blanco /I , conforman el Cuarteto de Los Ángeles, tetralogía que se ha convertido en un clásico de la novela del siglo xx, y que Literatura Random House ha recuperado. I América /I fue considerada la mejor novela de 1995 por la revista I Time /I , y al año siguiente sus memorias, I Mis rincones oscuros /I , publicadas también en este sello, volvieron a ser designadas mejor libro del año por I Time /I y uno de los mejores libros del año por I The New York Times /I .
