Tras licenciarse en Oxford en 1926, empezó su carrera profesional como corrector de x{0026}lt;i The Timesx{0026}lt;/i y crítico literario y cinematográfico de x{0026}lt;i The Spectatorx{0026}lt;/i . Durante la segunda guerra mundial trabajó para el servicio secreto británico, fue destinado varios años a Sierra Leona y posteriormente viajó por todo el mundo, experiencias que le servirían de inspiración para sus historias.
