Nació en Panamá, en 1928. Es uno de los autores mas destacados del siglo xx en lengua castellana. Recibió los más importantes premios como el Premio Cervantes (1987) y el Príncipe de Asturias (1994). Es autor de novelas como La región más transparente, La muerte de Artemio Cruz, Aura, Cambio de piel o Terra nostra.
