Father Amaro, a young man like himself, with a priestly rather than a diplomatic vocation, falls into a relationship with a woman, and their tragic story unfolds with a harsh relentlessness. The situation of women, tightly swaddled in conformities yet fevered in their illusions of romance, much troubled the young author in this and later books

Biografía del autor

José Maria Eça de Queirós (Póvoa de Varzim, 1845-París, 1900) es el escritor más relevante del realismo portugués. Estudió Derecho en Coímbra, donde convivió con muchos de los representantes de la Generación del 70 . Abandonó la abogacía para dedicarse a la carrera diplomática, que le llevó de cónsul a La Habana, Newcastle, Bristol y París. Con su amigo Ramalho Ortig o emprendió varios proyectos literarios como la publicación mensual As Farpas o su primera novela, El misterio de la carretera de Sintra. Fue autor de novelas muy conocidas como El crimen del padre Amaro, El primo Basilio, o Los Maia. También destacó como autor de cuentos y colaboró muy activamente en la prensa con artículos de crítica literaria, política y social, interviniendo en diversas polémicas. En la editorial Renacimiento se ha publicado El conde de Abraños.
