Tom Reiss (Nueva York, 1964) es periodista y escribe regularmente para The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal y The New Yorker, entre otros. Fue en 1998, durante un viaje que hizo a Azerbaiyán, cuando descubrió a Kurban Said y su obra maestra, Alí y Nino. Así empezaron más de cinco años de investigación, durante los que viajó por una decena de países para averiguar el misterio que envuelve, desde 1942, a este autor de múltiples identidades al que dedicó su extraordinario libro El orientalista.
