Es escritor, editor, matemático y un reconocido crítico literario. Ha colaborado con numerosos medios escritos y radiofónicos, entre ellos Le Monde y France Culture, y es considerado como uno de los autores más prestigiosos del panorama francés actual con una extensa obra que combina poesía, obras de teatro, novelas y relatos. Ha sido editor de autores como Raymond Queneau o Georges Perec. Desde 1992 es miembro del grupo de experimentación narrativa de vanguardia Oulipo.
