George Soros nació en Budapest en 1930. En 1947 emigró a Inglaterra, donde se graduó en la London School of Economics, y en 1956 se instaló en Estados Unidos, donde comenzó a acumular una inmensa fortuna a través de inversiones en los mercados de capitales. Dirige además una red mundial que agrupa más de 31 fundaciones y dedica anualmente una cifra cercana a los cuatrocientos millones de dólares a programas de ayuda en Asia Central, Europa del Este, la antigua Unión Soviética, Sudáfrica y otros países. Es doctor honoris causa en diversas universidades, entre ellas Oxford y Yale. Ha publicado varios libros, con gran éxito de ventas.
