Sketches of Spain (Impresiones y paisajes) was Lorca's first book, published when its author was just nineteen. A collection of finely honed meditations on the country's art, landscapes and history, it is infused with all the passion and excitement of a young writer struggling to find his voice. Serif's is the first UK edition of this formative work by one of the twentieth century's greatest writers, and is embellished by Julian Bell's unforgettable black-and-white illustrations, which take the reader straight to the beating heart of Lorca's Spain.

Lorca is entranced by the sunsets of his native city of Granada, enthralled by the Gothic magnficence of Burgos Cathedral, mesmerised by the 'savage splendour' of Castile's austere yet beautiful landscapes. He rages against the harshness and celibacy of monastic life while delighting in the monks' Gregorian plainchant, rhapsodises about the glories of medieval sculpture and revels in the romanticism of abandoned gardens.

Biografía del autor

Nació en 1898 (Fuente Vaqueros, Granada), y murió fusilado en agosto del 36. Se licenció en Derecho en el año 1923 en la Universidad de Granada, donde también cursó estudios de Filosofía y Letras. Desde 1919 convivió en la Residencia de Estudiantes (Madrid) con artistas y poetas que después formarían la Generación del 27. En 1929 se trasladó a Nueva York para matricularse en la Universidad de Columbia. También fueron trascendentales sus viajes a Cuba, Argentina y Uruguay. Sus obras poéticas entrelazan el lirismo andaluz y las vanguardias de principios del siglo XX. Dirigió la compañía de teatro La Barraca y escribió obras dramáticas fundamentales. Posiblemente sea el poeta y dramaturgo de mayor relevancia, influencia y popularidad de la literatura en lengua castellana.
