Simone Weil was one of the foremost thinkers of the twentieth century: a philosopher, theologian, critic, sociologist and political activist. This anthology spans the wide range of her thought, and includes an extract from her best-known work 'The Need for Roots', exploring the ways in which modern society fails the human soul; her thoughts on the misuse of language by those in power; and the essay 'Human Personality', a late, beautiful reflection on the rights and responsibilities of every individual. All are marked by the unique combination of literary eloquence and moral perspicacity that characterised Weil's ideas and inspired a generation of thinkers and writers both in and outside her native France.

Biografía del autor

Descrita por Albert Camus como el único gran espíritu de nuestro tiempo , la filósofa, activista y mística francesa Simone Weil (París, 1909), nació en el seno de una familia agnóstica de procedencia judía. Tras estudiar filosofía y literatura clásica, ejerció la docencia en diferentes liceos hasta finales de 1934, cuando abandonó por un tiempo la enseñanza para trabajar en la fábrica deRenault y como obrera agrícola en Marsella. Fue pacifista declarada y sindicalista revolucionaria. Formó parte de la Columna Durruti durante la Guerra Civil Española. A consecuencia de la ocupación alemana, abandona París junto a sus padres y se exilia en Reino Unido. Enferma de tuberculosis, murió en el sanatorio de Ashford, cerca de Londres, en 1943.
