Biografía del autor

Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) nació en Calw (Alemania), en el seno de una familia pietista y entregada al mundo misionero. De carácter nervioso y rebelde, pasa una juventud turbulenta que lo aleja de ella y decide su vocación literaria. El romanticismo alemán, primero, y luego su relación con la India y Oriente, con el psicoanálisis y su gusto por la vida natural y sencilla, unidos a periódicas crisis de rebelión y autodestrucción compensadas con incursiones en la espiritualidad, marcaron su vida -que atraviesa épocas y episodios cruciales para la vida moderna- y su obra. Hesse recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1946 y entre sus novelas más conocidas se hallan, además de "Demian", "El lobo estepario", "Siddharta" y "El juego de los abalorios".
