David Barrie creció en la costa sur de Inglaterra, donde se enamoró del arte de la navegación. A los 19 años cruzó el Atlántico en un yate de 35 pies, en 1981 navegó desde Lymington a las Azores y en 1984 participó como navegante en la China Sea Race desde Hong Kong hasta Manila.
