Nació en Los Ángeles (Estados Unidos) de padre iraní y madre americana. Como ella misma cuenta, de pequeña no paraba de hablar, por lo que cuando su familia se cansó de escucharla, se refugió en la escritura. Actualmente vive en Nueva York y.... sigue hablando mucho. Su primera obra conocida a nivel internacional fue Escuela de frikis (2009).
