Inexplicably out of print for years, it tells the tale of the dictator of an unnamed Latin American country who has been living the life of luxury in high-society Paris. When news reaches him of a coup at home, he rushes back and crushes it with brutal military force. But returning to Paris he is given a chilly welcome, and learns that photographs of the atrocities have been circulating
among his well-to-do friends.
Meanwhile World War One has broken out, and another rebellion forces the dictator back across the ocean. As he struggles with the Marxist forces beginning to find footing in his own country, and Europe is devastated, Carpentier constructs a masterful and biting satire of the new world order.

Biografía del autor

Alejo Carpentier nació en La Habana en 1904, hijo de un arquitecto francés establecido en las Antillas dos años antes. En 1921 abandonó los estudios de arquitectura y se dedicó profesionalmente al periodismo, integrándose al entonces llamado Grupo Minorista . En 1924 fue nombrado director de la revista Carteles. Encarcelado por motivos políticos durante el régimen de Machado, comenzó a escribir Ecue-Yamba-O. Ese mismo año participó en la fundación de la revista "Avance". En 1928 se embarcó clandestinamente para Francia, en donde permaneció hasta 1939. De regreso a Cuba consiguió un trabajo en la radio. Viajó a distintos países de América y se estableció en Venezuela desde 1945 hasta 1959, fecha en que regresó a Cuba, donde dirigió la Editora Nacional. Desde fines de 1966 residió en París, donde ejerció un importante cargo diplomático, hasta su muerte, en 1980. Carpentier publicó los libros de ficción Ecue-Yamba-O, El reino de este mundo (primera edición, 1949), Los pasos perdidos (1953), Guerra del tiempo ( 1956), El acoso (1958; Seix Barral, 1987), El siglo de las luces (1952; Seix Barral, 1965), El recurso del método (1974), Concierto barroco (1974), La consagración de la primavera (1978) y El arpa y la sombra (1979).
