Beginning in 1950 with the generation of Olson, Ashbery and Ginsberg, this is a broad survey - 411 poems by 103 poets - of the major poets and movements of the American avant-garde. Included here are the leading Beat poets, the "New York School", the Projectivists and "Deep Image" poets. Among the generation since 1975, the anthology traces the influence of language poetry and performance poetry as well as the writings of African American, Hispanic, Asian-American, gay and lesbian and women experimentalists.
