The three plays included here represent Calderon's most celebrated work, in which he explores the extent of man's freedom in a hierarchical society often bound by anachronistic codes of conduct. The plays are The Surgeon of Honour, described by Michael Billington as 'one of the most disquieting plays in all world drama ... a dark masterpiece', Life is a Dream, Calderón's most famous play, and Three Judgements in One, less well-known but one of his finest works.

Biografía del autor

Alfredo Rodríguez López-Vázquez, Catedrático de la Universidad de A Coruña, es Doctor en Filología Románica por la de Valladolid (1981) y Doctor en Études Hispaniques por la universidad de Haute-Bretagne (1979). Ha traducido y editado a escritores como La Fontaine, Jules Laforgue, Tristan Tzara o Fernando Pessoa y ha editado a autores del Siglo de Oro como Cervantes, Calderón, Vélez de Guevara, Ruiz de Alarcón, Andrés de Claramonte o Mira de Amescua. Ha sido presidente de la Sociedad Española de Didáctica de la Lengua y la Literatura.
