James Matthew Barrie nació en Kirriemuir (Escocia) en 1860 y falleció en Londres en 1937. Cuando apenas contaba seis años, murió su hermano mayor de trece. Este hecho marcó profundamente su infancia. A medida que fue cumpliendo años, su altura no aumentaba. A penas llegó a medir metro y medio de estatura, y le fue diagnosticado enanismo psicosocial. Durante sus años universitarios, en la Universidad de Edimburgo, fue compañero y amigo de Arthur Conan Doyle y de Robert Louis Stevenson. Trabajó como periodista en Nottingham y en Londres, donde pudo desarrollar su faceta como novelista y autor de teatro. Es conocido por haber creado el famoso personaje de Peter Pan, el niño que no quería crecer.
