James Matthew Barrie (Kirriemuir, 1860 Londres, 1937) fue un prolífico escritor y dramaturgo escocés, hoy recordado, principalmente, por haber legado a la posteridad la sugestiva imagen de Peter Pan. El tiempo y la crítica biográfica han querido simplificar el origen de la criatura en la traumática relación infantil del autor con su madre ante quien este asumió el papel de su propio hermano difunto y en su vínculo adulto con los niños de la familia Llewelyn Davies para los que ejerció de cuentacuentos y luego de padre ; la realidad, sin embargo, tuvo matices más complejos, que sitúan la génesis del controvertido héroe en las sendas de la mitología griega, del folclore feérico celta y de los relatos ancestrales referidos al doble.
