Se dedicó a la enseñanza hasta la publicación de su primer libro de relatos, x{0026}lt;I Kamisamax{0026}lt;/I , por el que recibió el Premio Pascal. Desde entonces, se ha convertido en una de las escritoras más leídas y galardonadas de su país. En 1996 obtuvo el Premio Akutagawa por x{0026}lt;I Hebi o Fumu x{0026}lt;/I y, en el 2000, el Premio Ito Sei y el Woman Writerx{0026} x02019;s por x{0026}lt;I Abandonarse a la pasiónx{0026}lt;/I .
