Oscar Wilde (Dublín, 1854 x{0026} x02013; París, 1900) fue poeta, dramaturgo y novelista, y una de las figuras más brillantes y provocadoras del fin de siècle europeo. Estudió en Oxford, donde destacó por su ingenio y su pasión por el arte y la belleza, que pronto convirtieron su nombre en sinónimo de dandi y esteta. Brilló en el teatro con comedias como La importancia de llamarse Ernesto o Un marido ideal, obras de una ironía fulminante. En 1891 publicó El retrato de Dorian Gray, su única novela, mezcla de cuento moral y fantasía decadente. En 1895, tras un escandaloso juicio por homosexualidad, fue condenado a prisión. Murió en el exilio, arruinado, pero con la gloria póstuma de haber escrito algunas de las páginas más afiladas y perdurables de la literatura inglesa.
