Anthony Burgess desarrolló una intensa carrera como educador en Gran Bretaña y Malasia entre 1960 y 1976. Desarrolló su actividad creativa tanto en el campo de la literatura como en el de la música, alcanzando justa fama como compositor. Escribió música de cámara y algunas obras para orquesta, y publicó entre otros libros un ensayo sobre Joyce, una panorámica de la ficción contemporánea y varias novelas: Inside Mr. Enerrby, Nothing like the Sun, The Wanting Seed, Trémula intención y Poderes terrenales.
