Tokyo, 26 January, 1948. As the third year of the US Occupation of Japan begins, a man enters a downtown bank. He speaks of an outbreak of dysentery and says he is a doctor, sent by the Occupation authorities, to treat anyone who might have been exposed. Clear liquid is poured into sixteen teacups. Sixteen employees of the bank drink this liquid according to strict instructions. Within minutes twelve of them are dead, the other four unconscious. The man disappears along with some, but not all, of the bank's money. And so begins the biggest manhunt in Japanese history. In Occupied City, David Peace dramatizes and explores the rumours of complicity, conspiracy and cover-up that surround the chilling case of the Teikoku Bank Massacre: of the man who was convicted of the crime, of the legacy of biological warfare programmes, and of the victims and survivors themselves. The second part of his acclaimed Tokyo Trilogy - and an extraordinary picture of a city in mourning - Occupied City is further evidence of this novelist's singular and formidable talent.

Biografía del autor

David Peace nació en 1967 en Ossett, en el condado de Yorkshire. Estudió en la Politécnica de Mánchester y en 1991 se trasladó a Estambul para ejercer de profesor de inglés, oficio que continuaría ejerciendo en Tokio de 1994 a 2009. Durante sus años de formación, vivió de cerca los crímenes del Destripador de Yorkshire, que sirvieron de inspiración a su primer ciclo de cuatro novelas, titulado genéricamente "Red Riding" y compuesto por "1974" (1999), "1977" (2000), "1980" (2001) y "1983" (2002), todas ellas traducidas al castellano. En 2003, David Peace fue incluido en la lista de los veinte mejores autores británicos de la revista Granta. Su novela "GB84" (2005), ambientada en la huelga de mineros de 1984 en Gran Bretaña, ganó el prestigioso James Tait Black Memorial Prize. En 2006, publicó "Maldito United", que fue adaptada a la gran pantalla en 2009 con dirección de Tom Hooper y con Michael Sheen en el papel de Brian Clough. La traducción fue publicada por Contra en 2015 y cuenta ya con varias ediciones. En 2007, inició una trilogía ambientada en Tokio poco después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial "Tokio, año cero", "Ciudad ocupada" y "Tokio Redux", las tres publicadas en castellano . En 2013 publicó "Red or Dead", que relata el periplo como entrenador de Bill Shankly en el Liverpool FC desde 1959 hasta su inesperada dimisión en 1974, y en 2018, "Paciente X", novela inspirada en las narraciones, ensayos y cartas del escritor nipón Ryunosuke Akutagawa. "Munichs" es su última novela hasta la fecha. Peace vive en Tokio con su mujer y dos hijos.
