William Lindsay Gresham (Baltimore, 1909-Nueva York, 1962) se graduó en 1926 y, ante la imposibilidad de encontrar un empleo fijo, trabajó una temporada como cantante folk en Greenwich Village. En 1937 participó como voluntario en la Guerra Civil Española, donde ejerció de médico en el bando republicano. Dos años después regresó a los Estados Unidos y pasó una temporada en una clínica para tuberculosos. Sus demonios interiores le llevaron de creencia en creencia: marxismo, psicoanálisis, cristianismo y budismo. Pese a sus problemas con el alcohol, Gresham escribió en 1946 su obra maestra: "El callejón de las almas perdidas", un clásico underground de la literatura norteamericana. La novela, adaptada al cine en 1947 y en 2021 por Guillermo del Toro, proporcionó a Gresham fama y dinero, pero lo perdió todo. La segunda de sus tres mujeres, la poeta Joy Davidman, lo dejó en 1953 por el escritor británico C.S. Lewis, y en 1962, gravemente enfermo, se quitó la vida a los 53 años de edad en la habitación de un hotel de Nueva York.
