(Nueva York, 1923 - 2017) fue una escritora muy reconocida durante toda su carrera como autora de literatura infantil y juvenil, mientras que sus obras para el público general recibieron en cambio una notoriedad únicamente tardía, cuando a mediados de los años noventa fue reivindicada por autores tan dispares como Jonathan Franzen o David Foster Wallace. Es autora de dos libros de memorias, un libro de relatos y seis novelas, entre las que destacan Pobre George (1967), Los hijos de la viuda (1976) y Personajes desesperados (1970), considerada hoy uno de los clásicos imprescindibles de la literatura norteamericana del siglo xx.
