New Territories

A visual and comprehensive survey of the various aspects of contemporary design and its interactions with craft and art in Latin America. New Territories explores collaborations between small manufacturing operations and artists, designers and craftspersons, demonstrating how the resulting work addresses issues of commodification, production, urbanization, displacement and sustainability. It is organized around various cities in Latin America, and the dominant themes and issues being pursued by more than 100 artists, designers/design studios and artisans in regions including Brazil, Cuba, Panama, Colombia, Mexico, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Chile. Richly illustrated scholarly essays by critics, curators, and art historians Regine Basha, Adela Borges, Marcella Echevarría, Antonio Sánchez Gómez, Magdalena Gruneisen, Adriana Kertzer, Ana Elena Mallet, Nessi Pope and Fabiana Lopes, Jorge Rivas Pérez, Gabriela Rangel, Mari Carmen Ramírez, Blanca Serrano, and Lowery Stokes Sims are presented here in this comprehensive volume. The publication accompanies an exhibition at the Museum of Art and Design, New York, from November, 2014 to March 2015.
