The novel opens with a person dying on their kitchen floor. It then takes us back 16 years to meet a young woman called Lily who's moving into her first home in Clapham with her new husband Ed, a struggling artist who she suspects doesn't actually love her... She loses herself in her job as a lawyer, and takes on her first criminal case defending a man accused of murdering his girlfriend. As her marriage implodes she starts to find herself drawn to this man but can he be trusted? At the same time we meet Clara, a young Italian girl who lives next door with her mother. Clara is growing up too fast, and she's learnt that if she wants something, she has to take it. When Lily's husband decides to paint Clara, a chain of catastrophic events is set in place spanning 16 years and taking the reader on a thrilling and emotional journey that ends in a shocking climax.
