Originally published in 1888, Mr Bazalgette's Agent presents a determined and resourceful heroine in the figure of Miss Lea, who grapples with some very modern dilemmas of female virtue and vice. Leonard Merrick said of the book, his first: 'It's a terrible book. It's the worst thing I ever wrote.
I bought them all up and destroyed them. You can't find any.' It seems Merrick was true to his word since copies of the book can now only be found in private collections and in a handful of university and national libraries throughout the world. This new edition offers the modern crime fiction fan an opportunity to rediscover an enticing and rare detective story.

Biografía del autor

Leonard Merrick nació en 1864 en Londres. Cursó estudios en Brighton y Heidelberg, pero a la edad de dieciocho años, a causa de la crítica situación financiera de su progenitor, se vio obligado a trasladarse a Sudáfrica para trabajar en un bufete de abogados en las explotaciones diamantíferas. De vuelta en Inglaterra, ejerció como actor y representante teatral en diversas compañías. Aunque enormemente valorado por muchos de los mejores escritores en lengua inglesa de su época, la obra de Merrick no gozó de demasiada difusión entre el gran público, y fue considerado durante años como un novelista para novelistas. Entre 1918 y 1922, algunos de sus más reputados colegas fueron publicando, en colaboración con el editor E. P. Dutton, una edición en quince volúmenes de sus obras completas -que incluía relatos, novelas y obras de teatro-, como reconocimiento y tributo al excelso trabajo de su camarada. Murió en 1939 en su ciudad natal.
