Nacido en Río de Janeiro en 1947, trabajó como director y autor de teatro, periodista y compositor antes de dedicarse a los libros. Desde la publicación de su primer libro, El Peregrino de Compostela (Diario de un mago), se han vendido más de 320 millones de ejemplares de sus novelas en todo el mundo. Entre sus mayores éxitos destaca El Alquimista, considerado el libro brasileño más vendido de todos los tiempos.
