When they return months later, they are apparently unharmed and yet subtly and profoundly changed. It is only years later, after their lives have been further shattered, that the narrator pieces together the young people's horrific stories and learns how the government used them against one another. In a riveting final chapter, their torturer himself enters the Café and sits among his former victims, claiming a right to join their society of the disillusioned. Biografía del autor

Naguib Mahfuz nació en Gamaliyyah, una zona del barrio antiguo de El Cairo, en 1911. Graduado en filosofía, ha publicado más de treinta obras entre novelas y relatos, la mayoría de las cuales han sido adaptadas al cine, al teatro y a la televisión. Considerado el padre de la prosa árabe contemporánea, en 1972 recibió el prestigioso Premio Nacional de las Letras Egipcias y se le otorgó el Collar de la República, el más alto honor de su nación. En 1988 le fue concedido el Premio Nobel de Literatura. Falleció en 2006 en El Cairo.
