The notion of duende became a cornerstone of Federico García Lorca's poetics over the course of his career. In his lecture Play and Theory of the Duende, he says, there are no maps nor disciplines to help us find the duende. We only know that he burns the blood like a poultice of broken glass, that he exhausts, that he rejects all the sweet geometry we have learned... The duende is portrayed by Lorca as a demonic earth spirit embodying irrationality, earthiness, and a heightened awareness of death. In Search of Duende gathers Lorca's writings about the duende and about three art forms most susceptible to it: dance, music, and the bullfight. A full bilingual sampling of Lorca's poetry is also included, with special attention to poems arising from traditional Spanish verse forms.

Biografía del autor

Nació en 1898 (Fuente Vaqueros, Granada), y murió fusilado en agosto del 36. Se licenció en Derecho en el año 1923 en la Universidad de Granada, donde también cursó estudios de Filosofía y Letras. Desde 1919 convivió en la Residencia de Estudiantes (Madrid) con artistas y poetas que después formarían la Generación del 27. En 1929 se trasladó a Nueva York para matricularse en la Universidad de Columbia. También fueron trascendentales sus viajes a Cuba, Argentina y Uruguay. Sus obras poéticas entrelazan el lirismo andaluz y las vanguardias de principios del siglo XX. Dirigió la compañía de teatro La Barraca y escribió obras dramáticas fundamentales. Posiblemente sea el poeta y dramaturgo de mayor relevancia, influencia y popularidad de la literatura en lengua castellana.
